Keresley RFC nearly spoil Bedworth's big day

The headlines first: Bedworth celebrate the opening of their new clubhouse; Keresley RFC have a squad of 24, with eleven players unavailable; Bedworth opt for a line-out instead of a scrum; Bedworth celebrate their narrow victory; Keresley show what they could achieve.

A starting squad of twenty-four, following on from twenty-three last week, was very encouraging. Bear in mind that eleven players were unavailable too… The signs are good for the season… A blistering opening twenty minute session saw us lead our two-league higher opponents, with our backs showing what is possible with good and quick ball. Our carries and structures worked really well overall, and the huge improvement in our line outs was very important for us, as we look to start the season positively away at Cannock.

Having won the first session 14-5, hopes were high for us to continue. However, the fresh impetus of about 10 subs by the opponents put us on the back foot a little, and a few missed tackles contributed to Bedworth winning the second session 12-0. A tight third session saw then add another score, which completed their day. If only… Those magical words as, right at the end of session 3, we were denied a clear pushover try as Bedworth’s pack crumbled – again – and their back row piled through to disrupt captain daddy Woody’s touchdown. We won the last session with a last minute pushover from a catch-drive lineout. We deserved that. The final result of 19-24 showed the level of determination the Keresley lads's showed.

Alex scored the two excellent long range tries in session 1, and Coops (great to see him in K’s colours again) bagged the driven lineout. We also kicked two conversions. Overall, a day where we showed our potential. Although we have had two tough pre-season games against higher league opponents, the value of the games to us has been good. We will encounter few sides with backs as good as OW’s, and few packs like Bedworth’s. The highlight of the day? Bedworth opting for “Line again, sir” instead of the 8v8 pushing contest which we clearly won overall.

A day where we could be very pleased with our achievements. A blank Saturday next week for many, although some of our newer players will be playing at Burbage – so support for them would be very welcome. Pre-season is complete. The next phase looks at adding to fitness levels, and developing particular aspects of the game. Well done everyone on Saturday, and thanks to our supporters for their excellent support.

It was Bedworth’s day, but we came out of it rather well.
